Republica district (Lively Downtown Area).
During the late 1800s, the Republica area was a very elite residential neighborhood with many mansions built by coffee-plantation owners. However, most of these owners soon moved a short distance to the west, to the next neighborhood over, in the new and more upscale Higienopolis district.
After the Mansions were torn down during the early 20th century the area went through a big transformation and started to house a variety of tall buildings, shops, public facilities and ended up being called the new downtown. The area was for a few decades the stage for demonstrations and rallies of the society calling for their rights like labor, women, social and freedom.
Nowadays the area is full of night clubs, movie theaters, restaurants and bars that are poplular among residents and are also with gay hangouts other than public institutions, open-air markets, a huge public library and theme streets that commercialize specific products.
Also, there is also the republic square surrounded by historical buildings like Italian Terrace and Copan and Eiffel designed by Neimeyer.
