Luz & Bom Retiro Neighborhoods (Garmet district).
In the early to mid-1900s, the Luz & Bom Retiro area was where many immigrants arrived at the city’s main railway station, Luz Station, where they came by
train after they arrived in Brazil at the port of Santos.
The area received a large amount of Italian, European Jews, Syrian, Lebanese, and Greek immigrants, who settled in the area.
The area fell into despair in the late 1900s, with prostitution and drugs, but, over the last decade the area has been revitalized led by city & state
government that are trying to turn the area into a first-rate cultural center.
Today, Bom Retiro and the adjoining neighborhood of Luz are made up of a large number of Korean and Bolivian immigrants and has become more of a commercial &
industrial area known for its shops, selling cheap clothes and fabric.
The most popular is the street known as Jose Paulino, where you’ll find a variety of shops selling the latest Spring/Summer fashion collection of
women’s clothing.
