The Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida is the largest shrine in the world dedicated to Mary, Mother of God.
Three Popes have visited the National Shrine: John Paul II, in 1980, Pope Benedict XVI, in 2007, and Pope Francisco in 2013, on the occasion of the World Day activities Youth, held in Rio de Janeiro.
On October 12th people from all different areas of Brazil visit the National Shrine for the Our Lady of Aparecida day, at which time the eyes of the world turn to accompany the festivities and great demonstration of faith of the Brazilian people .
The National Shrine welcomes over 11 million visitors annually.
With the motto: "To welcome well is evangelize" work at the Sanctuary 33 Redemptorist missionaries, various religious congregations of women, more than 800 volunteers and approximately 1,570 employees.
The shrine is about 2 hrs drive either from São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro. It is certainly worth spending the whole day in this great Brazilian landmark.
